Customer Carbon Offset Programme

The Customer Carbon Offset Programme is voluntary programme launched by HK Express in partnership with leading climate action platform, Chooose. Through the Carbon Offset Programme, HK Express customers can understand estimated greenhouse gas emissions generated from flying and purchase carbon offsets during the booking process, enabling customers to take climate action.

Carbon offsetting is a mechanism that enables individuals and organizations to support certified third-party projects that contribute to the reduction or removal of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The support of carbon offset projects has no direct effect on the flights for which the emissions have been estimated.

The projects are selected by HK Express, in collaboration with industry experts, and represent a diverse range of initiatives implemented across East and Southeast Asia.

FAQs

What is a greenhouse gas emissions footprint?

A greenhouse gas emissions footprint, also informally referred to as a carbon footprint, is an estimation of all of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that result from activities, transactions, or operations. GHG emissions trap heat in the atmosphere, and they include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gasses. Emissions generated from flying depend on factors including, but not limited to, the aircraft used, the type of fuel burned, the distance flown, the number of passengers, and amount of cargo the aircraft carriers.

WHow are emissions estimated?

Emission estimations follow the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Recommended Practice - RP 1726 to calculate the estimated greenhouse emissions associated with a passenger's flying on a particular flight. The RP 1726 calculation methodology takes into account multiple parameters including aircraft fuel consumption, seat configuration, cabin class, aircraft type, and historical load factors from more than 400 airlines. Precision of the emissions calculation can vary based on the input data. You can learn more about these parameters and the calculation methodology here.

These emissions estimates are provided for informative purposes only, and they do not reflect the actual emissions associated with your flight(s).

hWhat is carbon offsetting, and how does it work?

Carbon offsetting is a mechanism that enables individuals and organisations to advance climate action by supporting certified third-party projects that contribute to the reduction or removal of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Certified projects issue carbon offset credits, also referred to as offset credits or offsets, which act as an instrument for selling or trading the project’s associated removal or reduction impact. A project's ability to issue offset credits depends on a set of rigorous conditions – in order for a project to issue credits, the emission reductions or removals must be validated as additional, measurable, auditable, permanent, and unique.

Each offset credit represents a single unit of GHG emissions: one credit equates to one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) that is reduced or removed from the atmosphere or the carbon lifecycle.

aHow do I offset my flight-associated carbon emissions as a customer?

During the booking process, you will have the opportunity to view the estimated emissions footprint for your selected flights. Upon check out, you can voluntarily purchase carbon offsets. Your contribution will support high-impact certified carbon projects recognised by leading international standards. You can also purchase carbon offsets through the Manage My Booking page once you have completed the flight booking.

The support of carbon offset projects through this programme has no direct effect on the flights for which the emissions have been estimated.

tCan I purchase offsets for a portion of a booked journey (i.e. one-way rather than roundtrip, or for one customer from a booking for four customers)?

Our Customer Carbon Offset Programme is designed to offset the flight-associated emissions generated from the entire booking. Unfortunately, we currently do not offer the option to offset specific segments of your journey or for individual customers included within a multi-person booking.

Can I purchase offsets for a portion of a booked journey (i.e. one-way rather than roundtrip, or for one customer from a booking for four customers)?

The offsets made available through this program are from projects that are certified by internationally recognized carbon certification standards, such as Verra or Gold Standard. Each of these certification standards sets requirements for the design, implementation, and execution of a given project.

Accredited, independent, third-party verifiers then assess the carbon credits a project proposes to issue based on industry best practices as well as the verification criteria indicated in each specific standard.

iCan I change my carbon offset purchase after completing the flight booking or get a refund?

Unfortunately, payment for carbon offset is non-refundable. Once you have completed the flight booking and purchased carbon offsets, changes or modifications to the carbon offset purchase cannot be made. We appreciate your contribution towards a more sustainable future.
